What to Expect During In-Home Pet Euthanasia

Knowing what to expect can make saying goodbye to a beloved pet a little less overwhelming.

At Roadrunner Relief, our goal is to provide a peaceful, gentle, and unhurried experience in the comfort of your home. Your pet can remain surrounded by familiar sights, smells, voices, and the people they love while our veterinary team guides your family through each step.

We provide compassionate in-home pet euthanasia throughout North and West Valley Arizona.

Before We Arrive

You do not need to prepare your home for us.

You do not need to prepare your home for us.

Choose a place where your pet feels comfortable. This may be their favorite bed, the couch, a blanket on the floor, your backyard, or simply beside you.

You are welcome to have family members present and surround your pet with their favorite things.

If your pet is still interested in food, you can offer favorite treats or a special meal. There is no need to make the day look a certain way. What matters most is that your pet feels safe and loved.

When Our Veterinary Team Arrives

When we arrive, we will take time to meet you and your pet and discuss what to expect.

We understand that this is an emotional decision. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before we begin.

There is no expectation that your family immediately proceed the moment we walk through the door.

Our goal is to create a calm environment and move at a pace that is comfortable for your pet and your family.

Comfort & Sedation

Your pet's comfort is our priority.

Before the final euthanasia medication is given, our veterinarian provides sedation so your pet can become deeply relaxed and comfortable.

You can remain beside your pet throughout this process. You may hold them, pet them, speak to them, offer treats, play their favorite music, or simply sit quietly together.

Every pet responds a little differently to sedation, and our veterinary team will carefully assess your pet before moving forward.

When It's Time

Saying Goodbye

Once your pet is deeply relaxed and comfortable, our veterinarian will administer the final euthanasia medication.

You may remain beside your pet throughout the entire process.

You can continue holding, touching, and talking to them as they peacefully pass.

Our team will confirm when your pet has passed and then give your family time together.

There is no need to immediately say your final goodbye simply because the medical portion of the appointment is complete.

What You May Notice After Your Pet Passes

There are some natural changes that can occur after death, and knowing about them beforehand can help prevent unnecessary worry.

Your pet's eyes may remain partially open. You may notice a final breath, small muscle movements, or relaxation of the bladder or bowels.

These are natural physical responses and do not mean your pet is experiencing pain or discomfort.

Aftercare & Transportation

Additional Information

If Roadrunner Relief is handling your pet's aftercare, we will gently prepare them for transportation when your family is ready.

We understand how important it is for your pet to continue being treated with dignity after they have passed. Your pet will be carefully transported from your home to the cremation or aquamation provider.

Families may choose:

In-Home Euthanasia Without Cremation — $450

In-Home Euthanasia + Ashes Spread on Your Behalf — $550

In-Home Euthanasia + Ashes Returned Home — $650

For families choosing ashes returned home, we offer the choice of traditional flame cremation or water-based aquamation.

Our pricing is straightforward, with no additional fees based on your pet's weight, distance, emergency appointments, or same-day scheduling.

Memorial Keepsakes

Depending on the aftercare option selected, families may receive meaningful memorial keepsakes such as:

  • Your choice of urn
  • Clay paw print
  • Ink paw or nose print
  • Fur clipping

These small reminders can become incredibly meaningful ways to remember the bond you shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 623-218-8377 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Every family is different, and there is no single right way to say goodbye.

Children may be present if your family feels that participation is appropriate for them. Explaining what will happen beforehand in simple, honest language can help children understand the experience.

Other household pets may also remain nearby.

Some families choose to allow companion pets an opportunity to see or smell their friend after they have passed. Others prefer not to. Our team will respect whichever choice feels right for your family.

We do not want families watching the clock during such an important moment.

The amount of time needed can vary depending on your pet, your family's wishes, and how your pet responds to sedation.

Our focus is providing a peaceful experience rather than rushing through an appointment.

This is often the hardest question families ask.

Changes in mobility, appetite, breathing, comfort, sleep, interaction, hygiene, or the ability to enjoy favorite activities can all be important when evaluating quality of life.

Looking at patterns over several days can sometimes be more helpful than focusing on one particularly good or difficult moment.

If you are unsure, you do not have to navigate the decision alone. Our team can help answer questions about the in-home euthanasia process and help you understand the options available to your family.

Yes.

You do not have to wait to contact us.

Many families reach out ahead of time to learn about the process, discuss aftercare options, and understand what they should do when the time comes.

Planning ahead can help you feel more prepared and may allow your pet to remain comfortably at home rather than facing an emergency trip to a veterinary hospital.

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy, but it can be peaceful.

Roadrunner Relief is honored to help families provide their pets with a gentle goodbye surrounded by familiarity, dignity, and love.

Whether you are planning ahead, evaluating your pet's quality of life, or facing an unexpected decline, we are here to answer your questions.
